For Youniss Ahamad, music is a way to explore and explain the world around him. His journey began during quarantine, leading to tracks with jagged rhythms, heavy synths, and distorted vocals. In just four years, his sound has evolved into a mix of noise, electronics, and samples, influenced by post-punk and hip-hop. Youniss uses his music to examine and communicate his Black experience in Belgium, a country with a violent colonial history.
In his 2020 debut, Youniss primarily used samples, but in 2023’s White Space, he takes center stage with intense vocals. The album earned Bandcamp’s Album of the Day distinction and led to performances at major festivals. His next work, Do We Try Beyond The Edge?, deepens the rhythmic focus of his vocals, matching them to the angular rhythms and glitchy syncopation that define his sound.
Youniss describes Do We Try as a direct sequel to White Space, amplifying his previous themes with urgency. The album features confrontational vocals and rhythmic focus, with tracks like “Pieces Of A Man” and “Escaper” showcasing his growth. Youniss’ work is shaped by his experiences as a POC, offering a broader commentary on global anti-Blackness and adding to the tradition of Black art.
